In October 2012, two concerts were presented at Beihang University (in Beijing), with a programme devised by the Palazzetto Bru Zane – Centre de musique romantique française, a centre created by the Fondation Bru in Venice and devoted to the rediscovery of French composers of the years 1780–1920 and their works.
The concert given on 24 October was reserved for students and teaching staff of the École Centrale Beijing. The programme included works by Déodat de Séverac, Mel Bonis, Théodore Dubois, Florent Schmitt and Claude Debussy, performed by the pianist David Violi.
Some of these pieces were included in a second concert, two days later, given as part of Beihang University’s 60th-anniversary celebrations. On that occasion they were followed by a Mozart piano concerto performed by the Beihang University Symphony Orchestra, made up of students, with David Violi as soloist.
This concert, organised in gratitude to Beihang for its commitment to the École Centrale Beijing, illustrates the Fondation Bru’s keen interest in the rediscovery of a forgotten French musical heritage and also the University’s desire to make an important contribution towards bringing together the two different cultures – Beihang recently inaugurated its “Research and Study Centre for France”, with support from the Chinese Ministry of Education.
